Are you tired of travel restrictions due to the pandemic and eager to go out and meet new people? Vilnius, Lithuania, has an attractive solution: a real-time “gateway” to another city.

They contributed to creativity and design. It looks a lot like something from the old sci-fi movie/show “Stargate.” The city installed a circular “gate” near the railway station for the portal, which is connected to the portal in Lublin, Poland, located about 600 kilometers (or about 375 miles).

Vilnius said in a press release that both portals have large screens and cameras that can transmit real-time images between the two cities. This is a digital bridge designed to encourage people to “rethink unity.” “Mankind faces many life-threatening challenges, whether it is social polarization, climate change, or economic issues. However, if we look closely, the lack of talented scientists, activists, leaders, knowledge, or technology causes these challenges. Benediktas Gylys, president of the Benediktas Gylys Foundation, said that this is tribalism, lacks empathy and narrow views of the world, and is usually limited to our national borders. He said that the project is “a unified bridge, an invitation to overcome the prejudices and differences of the past.” The ring’s design aims to evoke the passage of time, and it is “a famous…symbol of science fiction.”

Engineers designed them at the Creative and Innovation Center (LinkMenu fabrikas) of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (Vilnius Technical University). The process is going on for five years, and the pandemic will be public at the end of the year. It’s timely. Organizers said that there are plans to add portals in other cities in the future. The portal is a joint project of a cross-cultural innovation project with the Benediktas Gylys Foundation, Vilnius, the City of Lublin, and the Crossroads Center. “From 3D modeling and design to digital content development and logistics challenges, projects like this require a large cross-functional team,” said Adas Meskenas, head of LinkMenu fabrikas. “When different people try to work together and achieve synchronization, such an important project came into being.”

Is it a bit tacky? Maybe. But he is also perfect and charming. I wholeheartedly build more portals because it is a very, very long year. We can all use some new inspiration.
