Lauer joined NBC in 1992 when he became co-anchor of the early weekday news show Today in New York on the network’s New York flagship station WNBC. He also filled the Live at Five co-anchor position with Sue Simmons after a year, finally permanently assuming the role and giving up the morning shift by 1994. (Maurice DuBois replaced him on Today in New York). Until 1996, Lauer remained on Live at Five.
With NBC News, Lauer’s on-camera presence would soon provide him with many opportunities. When needed from 1992 to 1993, Lauer filled in as the newsreader on The Today Show for Margaret Larson. While still co-anchoring Today in New York and Live at Five, this “audition” period allowed him to join The Today Show as a news anchor full-time in January 1994.

From 1982 until 1989, Lauer was married to television producer Nancy Alspaugh. They didn’t have kids. He later married Annette Roque, a Dutch model, whom he met in July 1997 on a blind date. In 2006, while pregnant with Thijs, Roque filed for divorce because of “mental abuse, extreme mental and emotional distress, humiliation, torment, and anxiety” by Lauer (as documents she filed indicated).
